Hi Lasandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into healthcare began with a deep-rooted desire to care for others, which led me to become a nurse over 15 years ago. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working in a wide variety of settings, from behavioral health to emergency rooms, surgical care, and even military nursing during my diplomatic tour in Germany. These diverse experiences allowed me to grow both as a clinician and a leader, honing my ability to adapt, innovate, and provide exceptional patient care as a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner.

In 2019, after returning from Germany, I realized that there was a gap in post-operative care, particularly for patients who undergo surgery and don’t have family or support to help them recover. With a passion for bridging that gap, I launched my own business—Leesang Services. My business focuses on providing specialized post-operative nursing care, wound care, IV infusions, and pre-surgical medical clearances, particularly for plastic surgery patients. As someone who knows firsthand what it’s like to face recovery without support, it became my mission to ensure that my patients never feel alone in their healing journey.

What started as a business idea has evolved into a full-fledged mobile care service where I am fortunate enough to build strong relationships with my patients, bringing personalized, high-quality care directly into their homes. My background in clinical leadership also gave me the ability to manage every aspect of the business—from patient care to business operations, such as budgeting, scheduling, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. Each day, I continue to feel privileged to provide comfort and skilled care to those in need, and it’s an honor to be part of their recovery process.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As with any meaningful journey, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Launching a post-operative care business has brought its share of challenges, especially in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape. One of the initial hurdles was building a network and establishing trust within the plastic surgery community. As a nurse providing post-op care, I had to proactively market my services to surgeons and clinics, showcasing how my specialized care could enhance patient outcomes. Establishing those relationships took time, as did educating both patients and surgeons on the importance of skilled, professional aftercare—especially in a field where many patients think they can recover on their own or may underestimate the complexity of post-op recovery.

Another significant challenge has been navigating the marketing space in today’s digital age. While social media and the internet offer unparalleled reach, breaking through the noise to reach the right audience—patients who truly need specialized care—has been a constant learning curve. Crafting the right message to convey the value of personalized, post-operative nursing care requires a delicate balance. I’ve had to refine how I communicate with potential clients online, which includes maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations, addressing privacy concerns, and building credibility in a market where there are a lot of conflicting opinions about recovery care.

Additionally, as the economy has faced its ups and downs, financial challenges have surfaced. In the current climate, many individuals are more cautious about spending, even when it comes to healthcare. This requires careful financial planning, not just for business operations but for pricing services in a way that is accessible for clients while still ensuring sustainability for the business.

Running a business also involves constant attention to operations, from staffing and training healthcare professionals to managing day-to-day logistics such as scheduling and ensuring timely follow-ups. There are always unexpected obstacles, whether it’s adjusting to new healthcare regulations or implementing quality control measures to maintain high standards. Despite these struggles, I remain committed to providing exceptional care, and each challenge has pushed me to grow as both a medical provider and a business owner.

What were you like growing up?
I was always reserved and studious, but I was always into the arts, never cared for the sciences ironically. I did 12 years of modern contemporary dancing and was always involved in the arts. I still enjoy painting artwork, dancing, and singing, and a comedian at times throughout school and beyond, I am a serial scholar by the way.

I always had care and love for people. A chronic social butterfly I might add. But somehow in the midst of life’s journey, I was always able to creatively incorporate the love of the arts with the sciences. Today I do the same in my purpose driven life while delivering optimal patient care delivery.
